TRAVELLING CARDIOLOGY AND IMAGING SERVICES

Why not have the convenience of a visiting Consultant Cardiologist in your practice?

No need for external referral, therefore the expertise remains “in-house”.

Mark carries a mobile top of the range Colour Flow Doppler ultrasound machine, ECG, Holter Monitor, Doppler Blood Pressure Monitor and Endoscopes.

As an experienced GP and surgeon, Mark is able to follow work into theatre if this is more convenient for the practice, e.g. Pericardial drainage, splenectomy, exploratory laparotomy, thoracotomy, diaphragmatic repair etc.

"Mark came to the practice for the day to train the team in cardiac ultrasound. He was an excellent teacher, able to train vets at different levels of experience, and has given the vets confidence to carry out in-house heart scans instead of referring. I would definitely have Mark back for further in-house training."

IN-HOUSE TRAINING COURSES

Mark has been training vets within their own practices all over the UK for over 18 years now.

He is able to offer a completely hands-on travelling trainer day course for your vets on your ultrasound machine within your practice. INFORMATION FOR OWNERS

Cardiology Referrals

Mark is happy to see any cases where a heart condition is suspected by your vet (e.g. a heart murmur or abnormal rhythm). Unfortunately under RCVS rules he cannot provide advice over the phone without having seen your pet, so you will need to be referred by your own veterinary surgeon. Mark can come to your local practice to examine your pet, so you don’t have to travel to a referral centre.

Preparation

Patients should come in for the appointment on an empty stomach (from 6pm the night before) just in case any sedation is required e.g. for X rays. Water should not be restricted.

Typically, you will have a detailed consultation with us and then a full heart scan will be performed. Please be aware that echocardiography requires good contact between the ultrasound probe and the skin via a coupling gel. To obtain the best images, this usually involves clipping some hair from the chest wall. Your pet may also need to have blood samples, blood pressure measurement, an ECG or X-rays as part of their work-up. Once all the tests have been completed, you will be able to pick your pet up later in the day and we will go through your pet’s long term needs and any follow-up required. After that, ongoing care and treatment will be managed by your own vet, but Mark will always be available to discuss any ongoing problems, changes to medications and to perform repeat heart scans and investigations as required.

Unfortunately, Mark does not offer heart screening prior to breeding at this time.

Abdominal Ultrasound Referrals

Patients should come in on an empty stomach (from 6pm the night before) as sedation is normally given for a full abdominal ultrasound. Water should not be restricted at all. Owners must be made aware that some of the fur is normally clipped from the whole abdomen to enable good contact between the probe and the skin. Other tests such as X rays, blood tests or biopsies may be performed at the same time if necessary providing consent has been obtained. Otherwise, a biopsy may be booked for a future appointment once more information has been gathered such as blood test /clotting results and consent has been given.

A discharge appointment is normally arranged later in the day to discuss the scan results.

INFORMATION FOR VETS

If you need to book a referral visit to your surgery, please ring 07970 681497, or send an e-mail to enquiries@markoverendcardiology.co.uk giving brief details of the case, your name, contact details and your practice details. Ideally please send a full history by e mail to enable preparation of the case beforehand. For efficiency, it is best to book a number of imaging referral cases together at the same time unless an urgent referral is requested. A quiet dark room with a consultation sized table must be available, a smaller table for the echo machine to stand on and electricity powerpoint. There should be sufficient room and manpower available for the animal to be restrained by one or two assistants while Mark is scanning to ensure the day runs smoothly. Colour Flow Doppler Echocardiography, ECG, Holter monitoring and blood pressure measurement may be carried out for Cardiology Referrals. Where indicated, some minor invasive treatments may also be done peripatetically, such as pericardial effusion drainage.

Abdominal Ultrasound referrals, endoscopy and bronchoscopy/BAL are also available, and Mark is happy to follow cases into theatre and perform e.g. splenectomy, exploratory laparotomy, enterotomy, enterectomy, pleural drainage etc if this is more convenient for the practice.
